Happy to be fat!?

So I was over on MTV.com because a co-worker of mine was yacking about the new Tila Tequila show, A Shot at Love, With Tila Tequila. That's a whole other story though! LoL

Anyhow, I was talking to her about the other show True Life. So I mosey-ed on over to the casting calls for the show. Ya know where they post what upcoming topics will be and you can apply with your photo and story to be on the show. Let's see what I found...

True Life: I Need Anger Management

True Life: I'm Schizophrenic

True Life: I'm a Southern Belle

True Life: I'm Happy to be Fat...

What? So they're going to do a show on Fat Acceptance? Somehow I don't see this thing being positive. I mean, granted the description below sounds like it might have a positive ring to it. But something about this just seems wrong. Something sounds like it's going to just mock a fat person. I dont know.

True Life: I'm Happy to be Fat

Are you overweight but comfortable with your body type? Do friends and family urge you to lose weight but you don't listen? Do you appreciate the feeling or appearance of being fat or do you like to date men or women who are overweight? Do you want to increase your weight? Have you set a goal in bodyweight or size that you're trying to reach? Have you encountered health problems or risks while trying to reach your goal?

If you appear to be between the ages of 18 and 28, and are happy to be fat, email us at: fat@mtvstaff.com with all of the details.

Please be sure to include your name, location, phone number and a photo, if possible.

What do you guys think? Are any of you going to email this staff to try out? Or do you think that it's all just fun and insults?

Oh, and you know.. I know how this show ends up. My highschool was the one in True Life: Prom Night. They butcher everything you say and turn it into whatever they want to hear. I dont know about this. Any comments, arguments.. etc??

I feel fat, but not happy today.

Hahahaha! :P That's funny :) Cause I remember post a few weeks ago discussing the fact that fat stretches the winkles out and makes you look younger.. generally speaking.

lol :)

I dont know how I'd feel about this. MTV and their affiliates are really well known for twisting facts and situations.

The question "Do friends and family urge you to lose weight but you don't listen?" has me very leery. There are a million other ways they could have phrased that. Also it sounds like they're equating Fat as Fetish and Chubby Chasers with HAES. I do not have high hopes for anyone whom they cast. They'll probably come out looking like a freak and a trainwreck regardless of whether or not they actually are.

Ya know.. That's what I was thinking too. I was wondering if they were trying to make it out to be something like a Springer show or Jenny Jones!

"Do you like dating overweight people?"
"Do you want to increase your weight?"

I just keep seeing a bunch of women up in tiny badly upholstered chairs yelling back and forth at their chubby chasers ;) LoL And a badly "did" hairdo on the host. LOL

I definitely understand your anxiety over the issue. But it seems like these folks have a bunch of pre-conceived notions about how fat people are (like everyone does) that need some serious smashing. The whole description that they listed is rife with problems. For example: "Do you want to increase your weight?" No, I just make an effort to be happy with my body regardless of how much I weigh. "Have you encountered health problems or risks while trying to reach your goal?" WTF? This shows that they clearly think that all fat people are fat on purpose, and that they actively strive to be fat.

No, I actively strive to be happy.

Sounds like they need a good kick in the butt. If you think you can handle their word-twisting ways, go for it. Someone needs to do it!

Yeah they definitely twist words. When my highschool was on the show, there was this junior class girl that was heading up the Prom committee and they followed her around for a few months. She ended up saying some nasty things but they just emphasized them and replayed them repeatedly. Like, stuff she said but shouldnt have been aired. I know that two faced people are screwed up and should be shoved in the head and all, but I really felt bad because after it aired the following summer, she moved away and transfered schools after all the hate mail and crap she got. She couldn't even go to her Senior Prom because so many people made it difficult to attend school there anymore.

it was pretty shitty, even if she was pretty shitty to begin with

Do you appreciate the feeling or appearance of being fat or do you like to date men or women who are overweight? Do you want to increase your weight?

are they looking for feeders & eaters? BBW date-scenesters? that's probably the angle they're going for, based on MTV's predilection -nay- obsession with sex.

Ew yeah! I kept thinking about that movie "FEED".

Bleh! That movie was gross.. and managed to piss me off!

I have to say that I LOVE True Life. Love it. I mean you haven't really experienced quality tv until you've watched "True Life, I'm a Staten Island Girl"

On their previous episode, True Life, I'm obese, they had a fat positive woman on it who was trying to be a model and was kick-ass in going to modeling calls that didn't ask for plus-size women. Her story wasn't such a problem.

you haven't really experienced quality tv until you've watched "True Life, I'm a Staten Island Girl"

This one is excellent but I really, really love the one where the guy gets calf implants (I think it's "True Life: I Want Plastic Surgery" or something like that). That one brings the LOLz every time because seriously. Calf implants.

I know of a couple fatshionistas who were approached about this a month or two ago. I believe they all declined.

I was tempted to try for it just to act like a militant psychopath. It's probably better for everyone that I resisted.

please please try out for it.....I want to see you be a militant psychopath on teevee

Sounds like a fetish thing to me, with the Do you want to increase your weight part.

with lines like "Do friends and family urge you to lose weight but you don't listen?" and "Do you want to increase your weight?" i really think this is more of a freakshow approach to shock and disgust the audience. like you said, they'll butcher and edit everything so it looks like they want it to look.

True Life doesn't really go for the shock and disgust thing, at least when I watched it. It's a fairly straightforward documentary show, as much as a show can be that is necessarily edited down to an hour.

"Are you overweight but comfortable with your body type?"

This is fine...everything after is kinda suspect.

True Life itself is kinda sketch, though there was one that I really liked--I think it was called "I'm graduating" There was one girl who was aiming to be the first of her family to graduate from High School. I was so happy for her when I saw that she did--it was kind of tough for her as her family got kicked out of their apartment. I just hope she does well in college.

They butcher everything you say and turn it into whatever they want to hear.

So true. My old high school's been on MTV twice now (High School Pranks and Made), and both times, they completely manipulated everything to what they wanted to show.

I'd be very surprised if they handled this in positive manner.

Sounds like they want to turn it into a sex/fetish thing.

As others have said, definitely sounds like they're going more for a fat fetish/feederism sort of angle rather than actual fat acceptance. Which, really - with friends like that...... snort.

If they're taking the freak show angle, I'm actually more upset that they're making fun of schizophrenics.

I don't expect them to be kind to the fatties, either, however. MTV sucks. :\

The schizophrenic thing bothers me too. I can't imagine any way that it WOULDN'T be patronizing to people with a mental illness.

I personally think they'll take a freak show approach to it. Just the way everything they said was worded makes me sort of arch an eyebrow. It almost seems like they're looking for people to mock. Asking if you're looking to make yourself FATTER, sounds like they're looking for feeders, like an above commenter posted. Asking about health problems encountered while trying to become bigger makes it seem like they want to tie that into WHY you shouldn't be happy being fat...like "hey look he wanted to be fat and now look at how sick he's making himself! Look what being overweight does to you!"..almost like using the health problems as fodder to emphasize why being fat is "bad".

I don't see it going over in a positive light at all. :(

I sent my shit in. If I get cast, I'm going to be a huge smartass dick and make it hard to make me look like a moron. It would serve them right if a bunch of us brilliant fatshionistas wrote in and got chosen and made the people trying to spin us look dumb.

I so want to write in but I'm blind and shows don't usually like 2 angles - plus I'm queer and kinky and such - just too much there for poor mtv to deal with. But if you get it, you have to diary it for us.
I think this is *hill-air-eee-us* in so many ways. Little guerrilla warfare never hurt nobody nohow...
